V. Conclusion

SSLA is a good reflection of the dramatic growth in so many aspects of life from the 1970s through the 1990s. The discussed above changes could be attributed to a number of general factors:

1. Administration

Successful management leads to successful business. Careful planning and administration is noticed in the review of SSLA history. The administrative aspect is left in part to Cambridge University Press who handled the part that SLA specialists have less experience in doing like advertising, distribution, and subscriptions. The editorial team was rearranged to match the editorial needs of the journal.

2. Subscriptions

The growth in the number of subscribers was a reason that encouraged SSLA publishers to move forward to a more aggressive publication policy that indicated the demand on this periodical. The announcement that appeared at the end vol. 2, no. 2 was an indication of the consequences of the increase in subscriptions.

3. Professional Conventions

As the first issues of SSLA have indicated, a number of conventions have contributed directly to SSLA. A number of periodicals have started the same way.

4. Focused Mission and Purpose

Some journals have a wide range of acceptable topics for publication. Those periodicals may have a good range of potential contributors but not as many subscribers as desirable. The reason is that the possibility of a given reader to find a focused material would be less. In SSLA the mission and purpose is clear and focused.

5. Technology

Talking about technology as being a contributing factor to the advancement of any given field is quite legitimate in almost any field. Technology has influenced most aspects of life. In SSLA, it brought so many editorial changes and raised the amount of published material. The articles reflected the growth that technology has brought to research in general.

Looking back into the 1970s issues is a rewarding experience. It reflects the extent to which control has been increased on publication in academic field. It also indicates the influential trends that dominated at times and diminished at others.
